Box Score
WILKES BARRE, Pa. – Two second-half goals by the
Susquehanna men's soccer team helped the Crusaders withstand
a last-second King's goal to grab a 2-1 victory on Tuesday
night in Wilkes Barre. Susquehanna (6-3-0) has now won three of its
last four games.
Brian Nobbs (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville)
and Adam Matteo (Exton, Pa./West Chester
Henderson) scored back-to-back goals in the second half.
Matteo's goal proved to be the game winner and also marked
his first score of the fall. For Nobbs, it was his second goal of
the 2010 campaign.
The Crusaders out-shot Kings (6-4-0) by a 12-9 margin although
the Lions held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
SU goalie B.J. Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern
Regional) finished the night with three saves to pick up
his sixth win of the season.
Susquehanna had chances to get on the board in the first half,
taking six shots to King's one, but none found the back of
the net. Only two of those shots forced Lions' goalie Andrew
O'Shura into action, however, and without a single shot by
either team in the final nine minutes of the half, it remained
knotted at zero at the midway point of the match.
Finally, 10 minutes into the second period, Nobbs broke the tie
when he took a pass from Andrew Brill (Westfield,
N.J./Westfield) and knocked inside the left post for the
1-0 SU advantage.
Twenty minutes later, Matteo made it a 2-0 game with a nearly
identical play, this time when Matteo took a pass from
Andrew Murphy (Natick, Mass./Natick) and put it
past the inside right post for the 2-0 cushion.
That goal proved to be important when, with 35 seconds left in
the game, Kings' Alex Martino connected on a penalty kick to
make it a 2-1 ballgame. Fortunately time expired before any further
goals could be scored as Susquehanna held on for the 2-1 win.
