WILKES BARRE, Pa. – A 3-0 hole proved too much for the
Susquehanna women's soccer team to overcome as the Crusaders
fell 3-1 to Wilkes College on Wednesday night in Wilkes Barre.
SU (3-6) gave up three goals in the first 48 minutes to fall
behind 3-0 before Alison Chavers (Frehold,
N.J./Ranney) broke-up the Colonels' shutout with a
goal in the 83rd minute of the match. The goal was the
senior's first of the season and fifth of her career.
The teams matched each other in shots at 10 apiece and
Susquehanna freshman goalie Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville,
N.J./Woodstown) made five saves in her 90 minutes of
action.
Wilkes' Megan Clementson capitalized on a corner kick in
the 21st when she redirected a Taryn Hallowell kick with
a header directly to the center of the goal for an early 1-0
lead.
With less than two minutes remaining before halftime, Hallowell
complemented her earlier assist with an unassisted goal to put SU
in a 2-0 hole.
It took the Colonels (4-6) less than four minutes into the
second half to net their third goal of the game for the 3-0
advantage.
Susquehanna's defense buckled down, though, and gave up
only four shots in the second period and kept Wilkes off the
scoreboard for the final 40-plus minutes of action.
Unfortunately the Crusaders also failed to find the back of the
net until Chavers' score with 82:51 on the clock. There was
not enough time for SU to mount a comeback, however, as 3-1
remained the final score.
