READING, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior
midfielder Austin Gordon (Millburn, N.J./St.
Benedict's Prep) tallied the gamewinning goal in the
57th minute to give the SU Crusaders a 2-1 victory in the Crusader
Cup championship against host Alvernia University at Schlager
Memorial Field on Sept. 5.
Gordon capitalized on a pass from junior forward
Joey Stellato (Convent Station, N.J./Morristown)
to give the Crusaders (2-1-0 overall) a hard fought win.
Alvernia (1-1-1 overall) notched the first goal of the game in the
19th minute but had an opportunity to tie the game back up at two
on a corner kick in the 74th minute. But the ensuing header attempt
was snagged by senior B.J. Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern
Regional). That save was Merriam's
only save but proved to be a crucial stop to give him his second
win of the season.
Crusaders senior forward Jim Robertiello (Chester,
N.J./West Morris Mendham) knotted the game up at one on a
penalty kick with just 1 minute, 17 seconds remaining in the first
half.
SU outshot Alvernia, 13-7.
