GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's soccer
team could not overcome an eight-goal performance from Gettysburg
on the opening day of the Gettysburg Tournament and fell 8-1 to the
Bullets.
Senior defender
Caitlin Murphy (Rutherford,
N.J./Rutherford) scored the lone goal of the match for
Susquehanna (0-1), in what also marked her first collegiate
goal.
Gettysburg (1-0) held a 33-9 edge in shots and saw seven
different players net goals.
Rookie
Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville,
N.J./Woodstown) got the start in goal for the Crusaders
and played the first 59:16 of the game before giving way to
classmate
Hilary Martin (Thornton, Pa./West Chester Bayard
Rustin). Martin played the final 30-plus minutes and made
four saves. Norbuts finished with five saves but surrendered six of
the eight Gettysburg goals.
The Bullets grabbed hold of the momentum early, firing off six
shots and netting two goals within the first 12 minutes of action.
Sam Hellerman netted both of the early scores for the
Bullets.
It turned into a 3-0 deficit for the Crusaders when Casey
Attanasio scored in the 17th minute. SU was still held
without a shot as the match neared the midway point of the opening
half.
Gettysburg's Lauren Macklin made it a 4-0 game with an
unassisted score in the 38th minute. That remained the
score at halftime as Susquehanna headed into the locker room still
without a shot in the game.
The Eagles went up 6-0 before Murphy netted her goal in the
68th minute on a blast from 30 yards out that went over
the hands of the Gettysburg keeper.
Unfortunately Gettysburg scored the final two goals of the
game to seal the 8-1 win.
