Women's Soccer Falls to Offensive Outburst by Gettysburg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's soccer team could not overcome an eight-goal performance from Gettysburg on the opening day of the Gettysburg Tournament and fell 8-1 to the Bullets.

Senior defender Caitlin Murphy (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) scored the lone goal of the match for Susquehanna (0-1), in what also marked her first collegiate goal.

Gettysburg (1-0) held a 33-9 edge in shots and saw seven different players net goals.

Rookie Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown) got the start in goal for the Crusaders and played the first 59:16 of the game before giving way to classmate Hilary Martin (Thornton, Pa./West Chester Bayard Rustin). Martin played the final 30-plus minutes and made four saves. Norbuts finished with five saves but surrendered six of the eight Gettysburg goals.

The Bullets grabbed hold of the momentum early, firing off six shots and netting two goals within the first 12 minutes of action. Sam Hellerman netted both of the early scores for the Bullets.
It turned into a 3-0 deficit for the Crusaders when Casey Attanasio scored in the 17th minute. SU was still held without a shot as the match neared the midway point of the opening half.

Gettysburg's Lauren Macklin made it a 4-0 game with an unassisted score in the 38th minute. That remained the score at halftime as Susquehanna headed into the locker room still without a shot in the game.

The Eagles went up 6-0 before Murphy netted her goal in the 68th minute on a blast from 30 yards out that went over the hands of the Gettysburg keeper.
Unfortunately Gettysburg scored the final two goals of the game to seal the 8-1 win.
Next Susquehanna match: Sunday, Sept. 5 – vs. Stevenson at 4 p.m. (consolation game of Gettysburg Tournament)
