SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A 12-0 run late in the first half
helped propel the Susquehanna men's basketball team to an
eventual 70-50 win over Goucher in Landmark Conference action on
Friday night.
The Crusaders (6-7, 2-0) grabbed their third straight win and
improved to 2-0 in conference play in the process. They were aided
by a 43 percent showing from three-point range, including a 7-of-10
three-point performance from the game's leading scorer,
Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), who
finished with 24 points. Spencer's seven treys were tied for
second all-time in SU single-game history.
Joining Spencer in double figures was J.T. Wilson
(Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional), who scored 13
points to go along with six rebounds.
Susquehanna boasted 16 assists to just 11 turnovers and also had
seven steals. E.J. Duncan (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pope John
XXIII Regional) recorded a game-high five of those 16
assists while adding four points and one steal.
On the other end of the floor, SU's defense limited the
Gophers (2-7, 0-2) to a 28.8 percent effort from the floor and just
23 second-half points.
The teams traded leads for the first 14 minutes, with Goucher
holding a six-point edge, 22-16, with 7:42 on the clock. Spencer
knotted the game at 22 one minute later, sparking that 12-0 run
which put the Crusaders ahead 28-22 with five minutes left in the
half.
Duncan's trey with 29 seconds on the clock marked the
half's final points and gave SU a 34-27 advantage.
Five minutes into the second half, freshman Harley
Sellinger's (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) tip-in
handed Susquehanna a double-digit lead (43-32). Goucher was unable
to bring the lead back to single digits for the remainder of the
game.
With 24 seconds to play, Eric Angstadt (Wyomissing,
Pa./Holy Name) put SU ahead by a game-high 22 points,
70-48, before the game ended in the 70-50 final.
