HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Landmark Conference play got underway for
the Susquehanna volleyball team on Saturday in the opening day of
the first round robin tournament of the fall. The Crusaders came
away with victories over USMMA and Goucher to jump out to a 2-0
league record.
SU (5-12, 2-0) swept the Mariners (25-16, 25-10, 25-17) and took
down the Gophers 3-1 (25-13, 25-12, 19-25, 25-13).
Against USMMA, Emily Carson (Caldwell, N.J./James
Caldwell) led the team with nine kills while also
contributing five digs and one block assist. Kate Reese
(Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) led all players with her
26 digs and three service aces, and freshman Julia Caruso
(Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had
24 assists, three service aces, five digs and two service aces for
a solid all-around performance.
In the four-set win over Goucher, Carson again led the team in
kills with 14 and had five digs, bringing her two-match total to 23
kills and 10 digs.
Caruso racked up 32 assists and 10 digs to account for the
team's lone double-double performance of the day. Meanwhile,
Reese added a match-high 33 digs and three service aces while
Natalie Cicioni (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylill)
and Kaylee Monga (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls)
had three block assists with Monga also adding a solo block.
SU plays Juniata tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the team's final match
of the weekend.
