WASHINGTON, D.C. – Susquehanna's bid for making its
first Landmark Conference Men's Soccer Championship game
appearance since the 2008 season fell short on Tuesday. The
Crusaders fell 3-1 at No. 1 seed Catholic on Tuesday afternoon in
the first semifinal game of the tournament.
SU (8-9-1) was making its second-straight Landmark Conference
Tournament appearance and fourth in the last five years. Last year
No.4 Catholic upset the No. 1 seeded Crusaders in the semifinal
round of the tournament.
The teams went shot-for-shot, with each side taking 14. The
difference came in shots on goal, as the Cardinals (14-3-1) had
seven to SU's five. Susquehanna did hold a decisive edge in
corner kicks, 7-1, but that failed to impact the ultimate outcome
of the match.
Goalie Pat Horan (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy)
got the start and played all 90 minutes. He finished with four
saves, two in each half.
Andrew Hayes (Hoboken, N.J./St. Peter's
Prep) accounted for SU's lone goal and teammate
Andrew Murphy (Natick, Mass./Natick) took a
game-high four shots on the afternoon.
It remained a scoreless match until 18 minutes remained in the
first half when Catholic's Mike Brennan fired a long shot
over the head of Horan to make it 1-0. That score stood until there
were 39 minutes left to play in the game. That was when Brennan
struck again to make it a 2-0 Cardinals' lead.
A successful penalty kick 18 minutes later by Kevin Romano upped
his squad's lead to three and decreased the chances of SU
mounting a comeback.
Hayes broke up the shutout with just over 10 minutes to go but it
was too late to chip any farther into the Cardinals'
lead.
The Cardinals will take on the winner of Wednesday's
semifinal game between No. 2 Drew and No. 3 USMMA which is being
played Wednesday at 7:45 at Drew.
