SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Six players finished in double figures
and fourteen Crusaders reached the scoring column as
Susquehanna's women's basketball team defeated Penn
College 99-49 on Saturday evening to advance to the Pepsi/Weis
Markets Tipoff Tournament Championship game.
The Crusaders (1-1) opened up the first half with eight points
in the first 1:15 of action and never looked back, leading 55-23 at
the break.
SU's bench outscored the Wildcats 33-5 in the first half,
with junior guard Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station, N.J.
/ Somerville) accounting for 10 of those points.
Penn College's Kierstin Steer went into halftime with 11
points, going 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Grunwald finished with a team-high 15 points. Sophomore guard
Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa. / Towanda Area),
freshmen Eleni Dimou (Center Valley, Pa. / Southern
Lehigh) and Shelby Weikel (Gordon, Pa. / North
Schuylkill) all finished with 11 points.
Rounding out the scoring attack was junior forward Gina
Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa. / Wallenpaupack) and senior
guard Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa. / Penns Valley
Area) with 10 points apiece.
Sophomore forward Ariana Stowe (Bethesda, Md. /
Bethesda-Chevy Chase) had a team-high 11 rebounds. The
Crusaders out-rebounded the Wildcats 64-32.
The Crusaders will now face SUNY-Fredonia in the championship
game at approximately 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
SUNY-Fredonia defeated PSU-Altoona in the opening game of the
tournament, 86-59.
The consolation game between PSU-Altoona and Penn College is at
1:00 p.m.
