WILLIAMSPORT— A desperation three-point attempt as time
expired couldn't lift Susquehanna past Lycoming as the
Crusaders fell to the Warriors 67-66 in a non-conference thriller
on Tuesday evening at Lamade Gym.
SU (0-2) took the lead into halftime 32-29 behind 4-of-4
shooting and nine points from junior forward J.T. Wilson
(Sparta, N.J. / Pope John XXIII Regional) and seven points
and six boards from sophomore center Harley Sellinger (Mill
Hall, Pa. / Central Mountain).
The Crusaders shot 46 percent from the field compared to 34
percent for Lycoming. SU held the edge in defensive
rebounding 15-10 in the opening half.
Both teams battled back and forth in the second half with the
lead never going past five points on either side.
Two Warrior free throws gave Lycoming a three-point edge (67-64)
with 30 seconds remaining. Sophomore forward Wally Rutecki
(Springfield, Pa. / Springfield) made a layup to cut the
deficit to 67-66 with 20 ticks left on the clock.
Lycoming (4-0) went on to miss two crucial free throws to give
the Crusaders one last possession to win the contest.
SU fired off a desperation three-pointer as time expired to give
the Warriors the nail-biting victory.
Sellinger was tied for the team-high with 14 points and grabbed
nine boards. Senior guard Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash. /
Lakeside) finished the evening tied with Sellinger with 14
points and six assists. Wilson registered 12 points in the
defeat.
Forward Kevin Anthony recorded 13 points and Anthony Martin
finished with 12 points for Lycoming.
The Crusaders are back in action next Tuesday, Nov. 29 as they
travel to take on Division II opponent Clarion at 7 p.m.
