SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Playing their fourth game in a week, the
Susquehanna women's basketball team faced its toughest
challenge to date as the Crusaders played host to
12th-ranked Lebanon Valley. The Flying Dutchmen proved
too much for SU to handle as Susquehanna fell 72-45.
Just one player reached double-digits for the Crusaders (2-2), as
Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station,
N.J./Somerville) netted 14 points to go along with five
rebounds. Leading the way on the boards for SU was Gina
Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack), who had 12
rebounds to complement her six points.
Free throw shooting was a major difference in the game, as Lebanon
Valley (4-0) took 29 attempts to SU's 17 and sank 25 of those
shots for an 86 percent clip.
The first half saw SU go into the break trailing 38-15 due in part
to a 14 percent shooting performance, countered by Lebanon
Valley's 48 percent effort over that span. Each team had 10
turnovers apiece during that stretch, but 13 free throws, and 20
points in the paint, helped give the Dutchmen their large halftime
lead.
A 6-2 SU run, with five points coming from Mariah Monahan
(Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area), made it a 42-23 game five
minutes into the second half. Monahan finished with nine
points.
Susquehanna was unable to pull any closer, however, and the Flying
Dutchmen took a game-high 30 point lead with 1:17 to play and
finished with a 27-point margin of victory (72-45).
SU is back in action on Dec. 3 with a Landmark Conference game at
Juniata; tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
