SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's
basketball team, playing in its final home game of 2012, fell 67-59
to Lycoming on Saturday afternoon.
Both offenses started out a bit slowly before Lycoming found its
rhythm. Up 5-3 at the 17-minute mark, the Warriors (5-3) then went
on a 13-5 run for an 18-8 lead. Over that stretch, SU was held
scoreless for three and two-minutes stretches.
Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station,
N.J./Someverille) snapped that stretch with a trey to make
it 22-11 with 10:47 to play. Lycoming, however, finished the final
10 minutes of the first half by narrowly out-scoring SU 12-9 to
maintain a double-digit lead at halftime, 34-20.
Rachael Scheller led all scorers at the break with 11 points for
the Warriors. Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa. /
Wallenpaupack) had six points and three boards at
intermission for SU.
The Warriors opened the half on a 12-6 run to take a 20-point lead
(46-26) after less than five minutes of action. A 6-0 run by SU
closed the gap to 16 points, 46-30, and an Ainsley Rossitto
(Rocky Hill, Conn. / Kingswood-Oxford) trey at 9:41 kept
it a 16-point game (54-38).
Palazzi followed with a bucket that made it 54-40 with 8:54 on the
clock.
Senior Korey McCaffrey's (Millheim,
Pa. / Penns Valley Area) three with just over one minute
to play suddenly made it an 11-point game at 65-54. With 47 seconds
to play, freshman Eleni Dimou (Center Valley, Pa. /
Southern Lehigh) drained a three of her own to keep the
lead at 11 (66-57) but Lycoming went on to the 12-point margin of
victory.
McCaffrey finished the afternoon with a team-best 12 points and
five assists. Palazzi chipped in 10 points and grabbed eight
rebounds. Sophomore guard Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa. /
Towanda Area) had 10 points for the Crusaders.
Lycoming had four players in double figures, with Scheller
leading the way with 23 points.
SU (2-6) returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 17 for a 1 p.m.
non-conference game at McDaniel.
