HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball
team dug itself an early hole against undefeated Juniata, one the
team was unable to overcome. The Crusaders fell 83-53 in their
Landmark Conference opener.
SU (2-3, 0-1), which shot just 18.5 percent in the first half,
finished with a 31 percent shooting effort, and shot 93 percent at
the free throw line (13-of-14).
Only one player reached double figures as Mariah Monahan
(Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) led the team with 11 points in
her 27 minutes of action. Amarra Boone (Schewenksville,
Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was the team's leading
rebounder with six. She also added six points and two blocks.
As a team, however, the Crusaders finished with only 36 rebounds to
Juniata's 32.
The Crusaders found themselves in a 10-0 hole after three minutes
of play and were down 12-0 after five minutes. SU got on the board
with a Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station,
N.J./Somerville) jump shot at 13:36 that made it 15-2.
Halfway through the opening period, the Eagles (7-0, 1-0) led by 20
(24-4). Monahan made her team's first three-pointer at
the 7:38 mark that made it 32-10 but Susquehanna still found itself
down by 28 (38-10) three minutes later.
Juniata took a 30-point edge (40-10), its largest lead to that
point, with 4:03 on the clock and went into halftime up 50-14.
The Crusaders put together a 39-point second half but it was not
nearly enough to chip very far into Juniata's lead. The
Eagles led 71-46 with three minutes to play. It was a 25-point game
(78-53) inside the one-minute mark as Juniata went on for the 83-53
win.
