WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball team
continued its road struggles Wednesday night, falling 76-56 at
Wilkes despite a double-double from Gina Palazzi
(Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack).
Palazzi led SU with 10 points and 12 rebounds in her 24 minutes of
action. Freshman Eleni Dimou
(Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) netted nine points to
go along with four assists, three steals and three rebounds. SU
shot only 32 percent from the floor and only eight percent from
three-point range. The team also committed 29 turnovers.
SU (2-5) was dominant on the boards, however, pulling 57 rebounds
to Wilkes' 40. Shannon Grunwald
(Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) had nine while
Amarra
Boone (Schewenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) chipped
in seven.
Wilkes took an early 8-0 lead before Palazzi got SU on the
scoreboard with a basket at the 18:07 mark.
A Boone jumper with 15:42 on the clock cut Wilkes' lead to five
(11-6). It remained 11-6 for the next two and a half minutes when
Megan Kazmerski hit one of two free throws to make it 12-6.
At the midway point of the half, the Colonels led 18-6 and built
their lead to 18 points (35-17) by halftime.
With 15:25 on the clock in the second half, Wilkes held a 29-point
lead, 53-23, as the Colonels had outscored SU 18-6 during that
time.
Susquehanna found itself in a game-high 35-point hole, 59-24, less
than two minutes later. A Jennifer Montan
(Landing, N.J./Roxbury) jumper with 3:07 to play made it a
16-point game at 70-54 but Susquehanna did not pull any closer.
The Crusaders return home on Saturday, Dec. 17 to host Lycoming at
1 p.m.
