SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's
basketball team fell behind Scranton early and was unable to
overcome that slow start, ultimately falling 75-38 to the
Royals.
SU (11-12, 6-6) had just one player reach double figures as
senior Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area)
netted 18 for the Crusaders, half of which came at the free throw
line as she went 9-for-9 at the charity stripe.
Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley
Area) led SU with five rebounds while Barron added a
team-best three assists.
Scranton (17-5, 11-1) scored 34 points in the paint, compared to
just six by Susquehanna, and shot 49 percent from the floor while
holding SU to a 21 percent showing.
The Royals opened the game on a 6-2 run over the first three
minutes and the Crusaders fell behind by double digits at the 9:30
mark when a three-pointer by Jennifer King made it 17-7.
The Crusaders then went two minutes without another point and
trailed 27-9 with three minutes on the clock. SU managed just two
more points over those final three minutes and trailed 33-11 at
halftime.
Susquehanna's offense did come more alive in the second
half but Scranton's offense also continued its stride and
out-scored SU 42-27 in the final period.
The Crusaders found themselves down by 28 with 13:22 to play
were unable to cut Scranton's lead to less than 24 points
during the final 13 minutes. The Royals scored four of the final
five points of the game en route to the 75-38 victory.
