SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University
women's basketball team closed out its 2010-11 home season
with a 78-76 win over Moravian on Senior Day.
SU (12-12, 7-6) scored the first basket of the game and held a
10-8 advantage with 15:49 remaining in the first half before
Moravian (14-10, 9-4) went on a short, 7-2 run to take the lead,
15-12.
The Crusaders answered back with their own 6-1 run to retake the
lead at 18-16 on a jumper by senior Erika Barron (Tamaqua,
Pa./Tamaqua Area) with 11:38 to go.
Both teams went back and forth over the final 11 minutes of the
first half, as neither team led by more than five points, (SU
40-35), and the score was tied on six different occasions (nine
total in the first half).
With four seconds left in the half, SU led, 42-40, but a
successful half-court shot by the Greyhounds gave them a 43-42 lead
going into the locker room.
Barron led SU with 14 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting
from the floor, including 2-of-5 from long range.
Fellow seniors Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North
Schuylkill) and Samantha Cartwright (Cranford,
N.J./Cranford) chipped in eight and nine points,
respectively, in the first 20 minutes of action.
As the second half started, Moravian began on a 12-3 run to build
its biggest lead of the game, 55-45, with just over 16 minutes left
in the contest. SU would not let the deficit grow any bigger, and
brought the lead within four, 60-56, with 12 minutes left on a
transition three-pointer by Barron.
With 8:20 to go, junior Korey McCaffrey (Millheim,
Pa./Penns Valley Area) gave the Crusaders their first lead
since their 42-40 advantage courtesy of a three to propel them to a
63-61 edge. Just one minute later, Barron nailed
another three to build the lead back up to five (66-61).
Moravian would not go down without a fight, as the Greyhounds
brought the game back in their favor on a layup with 3:40 left and
regained the lead, 71-70.
Over the final three minutes of the game, both teams traded
baskets until Moravian had three chances down low to force the game
into overtime but could not score and fell, 78-76.
Barron led all players with 29 points, eight
assists and five steals. Also contributing double figures were
Hughes with 12 and Cartwright with 11.
SU shot 46 percent from the field and sank more than 42 percent
of its three-point shots. The Crusaders also scored 24 points off
Moravian turnovers.
Final game for Susquehanna: Saturday, Feb. 19, at Juniata,
5:30 p.m.
