Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University women's basketball team closed out its 2010-11 home season with a 78-76 win over Moravian on Senior Day.

SU (12-12, 7-6) scored the first basket of the game and held a 10-8 advantage with 15:49 remaining in the first half before Moravian (14-10, 9-4) went on a short, 7-2 run to take the lead, 15-12.

The Crusaders answered back with their own 6-1 run to retake the lead at 18-16 on a jumper by senior Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) with 11:38 to go.

Both teams went back and forth over the final 11 minutes of the first half, as neither team led by more than five points, (SU 40-35), and the score was tied on six different occasions (nine total in the first half).

With four seconds left in the half, SU led, 42-40, but a successful half-court shot by the Greyhounds gave them a 43-42 lead going into the locker room.

Barron led SU with 14 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-5 from long range.

Fellow seniors Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill) and Samantha Cartwright (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) chipped in eight and nine points, respectively, in the first 20 minutes of action.

As the second half started, Moravian began on a 12-3 run to build its biggest lead of the game, 55-45, with just over 16 minutes left in the contest. SU would not let the deficit grow any bigger, and brought the lead within four, 60-56, with 12 minutes left on a transition three-pointer by Barron.

With 8:20 to go, junior Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley Area) gave the Crusaders their first lead since their 42-40 advantage courtesy of a three to propel them to a 63-61 edge. Just one minute later, Barron nailed another three to build the lead back up to five (66-61).

Moravian would not go down without a fight, as the Greyhounds brought the game back in their favor on a layup with 3:40 left and regained the lead, 71-70.

Over the final three minutes of the game, both teams traded baskets until Moravian had three chances down low to force the game into overtime but could not score and fell, 78-76.

Barron led all players with 29 points, eight assists and five steals. Also contributing double figures were Hughes with 12 and Cartwright with 11.

SU shot 46 percent from the field and sank more than 42 percent of its three-point shots. The Crusaders also scored 24 points off Moravian turnovers.
