HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The 2010-11 Susquehanna women's
basketball season came to an end Saturday night as the Crusaders
fell to Juniata 76-65.
Seniors Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua
Area) and Samantha Cartwright (Cranford,
N.J./Cranford) combined for 41 of SU's 65 points,
with 12 of Barron's coming from three-point range. Barron
also chipped in a team-high six boards and five assists in her 35
minutes of action.
Turnovers proved costly for Susquehanna (12-14, 7-7), as their
17 miscues translated into 19 Eagles points.
Nikki Schneck's (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mounain
East) trey two minutes into the game marked SU's
first points of the night and immediately cut Juniata's 6-0
in half.
Back-to-back buckets from Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland,
Pa./Wallenpaupack) and Cartwright made it a one-point
game, 8-7, and Cartwright netted a three-pointer to give the
Crusaders their first lead of the night, 10-8, with 13:18 left in
the half.
More than two minutes elapsed before either team scored a point
as Juniata's Kate McDonald sank two, game-tying free throws
with under 11 minutes on the clock. Cartwright responded with a
layup for the 12-10 Susquehanna lead at the midway point of the
half.
The Eagles (19-6, 12-2) countered with a 7-2 run but Cartwright
kept her squad in the game, as her layup with 7:37 on the clock
pulled SU back within one (17-16).
With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Susquehanna
trailed by just three points, 23-20. Barron ended the half on a
high note for SU, sinking back-to-back three-pointers, the second
of which tied the game at 30 with 46 seconds on the clock, and the
Crusaders went into halftime down by only two points, 32-30.
Barron came out of halftime and promptly scored her
third-straight basket to knot the game at 32-all. SU went up 41-37
on a Korey McCaffrey (Millhem, Pa./Penns Valley
Area) layup with under 16 minutes to play and
Palazzi's jumper less than 90 seconds later kept the
Crusaders ahead 43-41.
Unfortunately, the Eagles were able to put together a 14-3 run
to take a 55-46 lead with 9:18 to play. Susquehanna remained behind
by six (57-51) despite a Cartwright three at the 8:30 mark. Juniata
then took a double-digit lead (61-51) with 6:31 to play and SU was
unable to bring the lead under five points for the remainder of the
game.
