SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A season-high 18 goals helped propel
the Susquehanna women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 win over
visiting Lebanon Valley College on Thursday afternoon. The victory
was SU's third-straight and improved the squad's record
to 4-3.
Junior Erin Dyer (West Caldwell, N.J./James
Caldwell) tied for the game-high with seven goals and a
trio of teammates added three goals apiece in Sarah Wright
(Princeton, N.J./Princeton HS), Lindsey Derstine
(Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Michelle
McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph). Derstine and Wright
also chipped in two assists while Dyer added one.
SU goalie Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye
Falls-Lima) recorded nine saves and played a solid final
30 minutes, limiting the Flying Dutchmen (2-3) to only four goals.
Her fellow defenders allowed Lebanon Valley to get off only nine
shots during that span and SU caused 17 Flying Dutchmen turnovers
over the 60 minutes of action, led by four from Ainsley
Rossitto (Rocky Hill, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford).
The Crusaders held a 36-27 edge in shots, won 17-of-32 draw
controls and committed only 19 turnovers.
The teams traded goals to open the first five minutes of action,
with the Lebanon Valley briefly taking a 3-2 lead with 25:30 on the
clock. SU then strung together three goals from three different
players to grab a 4-2 edge.
Back-to-back scores from Dyer and
Derstine made it 6-3 at the midway point of the
half, but Lebanon Valley scored four of the next five goals to knot
it at seven-all.
Dyer and Ally Bauer (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon)
added unassisted goals within a 90-second span and the Crusaders
withstood a Lebanon Valley goal with 1:12 on the clock to maintain
a 9-8 halftime lead.
It was all Susquehanna in the second half as the team out-scored
Lebanon Valley 9-4, including a run of seven unanswered goals over
a 12-minute stretch that made it 17-9 with 12:35 to play.
Derstine capped off the game's scoring with
a goal at the 7:10 mark and Susquehanna shut down the Flying
Dutchmen for the remainder of the game to come away with the 18-12
victory.
