WESTMINSTER, Md. – One of its most impressive defensive
efforts of the season helped lead the Susquehanna women's
lacrosse team to a 14-6 road win at McDaniel on Thursday afternoon.
The Green Terror managed only six goals against SU while the
Crusaders saw six players net goals en route to the team's
fourth-straight victory.
The six goals scored against SU (5-3) were the fewest the team has
given up this season while the 10 goals marked the seventh-straight
game Susquehanna has netted double-digit goals.
Sarah Wright (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) led all
players with four goals and chipped in three assists for a
seven-point afternoon. Erin Dyer (West
Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) matched Wright with three
assists and added one goal. Michelle McGinniss (Randolph,
N.J./Randolph) and Ally Bauer (Kinnelon,
N.J./Kinnelon) recorded hat tricks while Lindsey
Derstine (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) finished with
two goals.
Sophomore goalie Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls,
N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) made 10 saves as she played all
60 minutes of the game.
The Crusaders took 27 shots to McDaniel's 24 and won 11 of
the game's 21 draw controls.
It took Susquehanna just over eight minutes to get on the board as
Bauer fed Derstine in front of
the McDaniel goal and Derstine then found the back of the net for
the 1-0 SU lead.
The Crusaders then rattled off three goals from three different
players in a two-minute stretch to up their edge to four.
Emily Walsh (Ringwood, N.J./DePaul Catholic) made
it 5-0 with a goal at the 9:08 mark of the half before McDaniel
finally got on the scoreboard with a goal at the 6:30 mark.
The Green Terror (1-8) made it two straight scores thanks to a
goal with 1:38 to play, but Wright connected on a
free position shot with just 15 seconds remaining to give her team
a four-goal cushion (6-2) at halftime.
SU picked up right where it left off as Derstine
netted her second goal of the game, and 16th of the
season, less than 90 seconds into the second half to make it
7-2.
McGinniss's goal seven minutes later kept
Susquehanna ahead by five, 8-3, and two more unanswered goals made
it 10-3 with 11:50 still to play.
The Green Terror scored two goals over the final 10 minutes,
including one with one second remaining, but the Crusaders held on
for an eight-goal margin of victory.
