WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Ten different players scored for the
Susquehanna men's lacrosse team, led by Dustin
Breakey's (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley)
four-goal performance, as the Crusaders took down King's
(Pa.) by a score of 13-6 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Breakey, who also led SU with three goals in its season-opening
win over Washington & Jefferson last Saturday, now has seven
goals through the Crusaders first two games of the season. Against
the Monarchs (1-2), he also added two assists, bringing his season
points total to nine.
Freshman Pat Brogan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield)
set up the Susquehanna offense all afternoon, finishing with a
game-high four assists. Luke Delevan (Madison,
N.J./Madison) also added two assists.
Starting goalie Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes,
N.J./Mountain Lakes) played all but the final four minutes
of the game, recording 16 saves while giving up only six goals in
34 shots faced. Blake Middendorf (Wayne,
Pa./Radnor) came in for the closing minutes of the
game.
SU held a 41-34 edge in shots and won an impressive 14-of-23
faceoffs, led by 13 from Ryan Oakes (North Yarmouth,
Maine/Cheverus), who also had seven ground balls. The
Crusaders also helped force 19 King's turnovers and limited
the Monarchs to just two goals in the second half, including none
in the final quarter.
Less than three minutes into the game, King's Kieran
McMahon netted the first goal of the game to give his squad the
early 1-0.
SU responded in the form of three unanswered goals to close out
the opening quarter. Matt Weiner (Bound Brook,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) scored the tying goal
and with six minutes left in the quarter, Billy Spack
(Arlington, Va./Yorktown) scored a man-up goal to put the
Crusaders ahead 2-1.
Breakey continued the first-quarter scoring
with a goal at the 1:35 mark to make it 3-1. The junior then opened
the second quarter action with his second goal of the afternoon for
a 4-1 SU lead.
The Monarchs broke that stretch with a goal at the 11:38 mark,
but 30 seconds later, Justin Caba (Yonkers,
N.Y./Stepinac) netted his first score of the season to up
the lead back to three (5-2). Ninety seconds later, SU added yet
another goal from freshman Matt Brady (Charlotte,
N.C./Providence HS), with an assist from Breakey, for a
6-2 score.
Another rookie, Austen Lein (New Vernon,
N.J./Madison), kept the scoring coming with a goal at the
midway point of the quarter that made it 7-2. King's scored
back-to-back goals before Justin Darlea
(Allentown, N.J./Allentown) ended the first-half
scoring with a goal with 1:55 on the clock to give his squad an 8-4
halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, Breakey sandwiched two
more scores around a Monarchs goal to make it 10-5 with seven
minutes remaining. By the end of the quarter, SU led 11-6 thanks to
a Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) goal
inside the two-minute mark. Pastore went on to finish with a
game-high 10 ground balls.
Jacob Farrell (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan)
became the ninth Crusader to score when he made it 12-6 with 10:41
remaining. Breakey scored his fourth and final goal two minutes
later to make it 13-6, which remained the final score.
