ELMIRA, N.Y. – Despite out-scoring Elmira 7-5 over the
final 30 minutes of action, the Susquehanna men's lacrosse
team was edged by the Soaring Eagles, 10-9, on Sunday afternoon.
The Crusaders were playing their second game in as many days after
dropping an overtime game to Landmark Conference foe Catholic on
Saturday.
It marked the second-straight one-goal loss for SU (5-5) and third
of the season.
Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood),
Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) and
Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) all had two goals to account for six of
Susquehanna's 10 scores on the afternoon. Delavan also added
an assist, as did Pastore.
Goalie Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain
Lakes) played the first 30 minutes and finished with 11
saves while Will Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath
Haven) had seven saves in his 30 minutes of action while
both goalies allowing five goals.
SU actually held a 52-44 edge in shots over Elmira (3-4), led by
eight from Breakey.
The Crusaders scored the final two goals of the opening quarter to
take a 2-1 lead but Elmira shut out SU in the second quarter 4-0 to
regain a 5-2 lead at halftime.
The Soaring Eagles proceeded to score the first two goals of the
third quarter to go up 7-2 with 13:17 to play in the period. From
that point on, though, Susquehanna out-scored Elmira 7-3. The
Crusaders closed out the third quarter with four unanswered goals,
including the final one of the period from Pete Doelp
(Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) that made it 7-6.
Trailing 10-8 with under three minutes to play, Billy Spack
(Arlington, Va./Yorktown) again made it a one-goal game
with his score at the 2:25 mark but the clock ran down before SU
could put another goal in the net.
