SCRANTON, Pa. – Playing on live television did not faze
the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team, which won a 13-10
decision at Marywood in a game that was aired live on Fox56.
The Crusaders (8-5) grabbed their third-straight victory thanks in
part to a six-goal second quarter and a solid defensive effort that
saw the Pacers (9-4) score just one goal in the third quarter and
only four over the entire second half.
SU held a 37-27 edge in total shots, had 45 ground balls and
forced 26 Marywood turnovers. Jacob
Farrell (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and
Dave Rinaldi (Hingham, Mass./Boston College HS)
led the way with three caused turnovers apiece.
Billy Spack (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and
Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) netted four
goals apiece to account for more than half of SU's scoring
output. Spack also added two assists while Dustin Breakey
(Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was credited with a
game-high five assists.
Goalies Will Torrence (Wallingford,
Pa./Pennsbury) and Anthony Maiorella (Mountain
Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) each played a half, with
Maiorella making seven saves over the 30 final 30 minutes.
Marywood actually led 3-1 after the first quarter thanks to three
unanswered goals to close out the period.
However, the second quarter saw SU tie it at five-all on a Spack
goal with 3:45 to play. Delavan kept it tied at six with a goal one
minute later and Delavan and Austen Lein (New Vernon,
N.J./Madison) netted goals in the final 2:35 of the half
to hand SU a 7-6 halftime lead.
The third quarter marked the turning point in the game as SU
scored four straight goals, from four different players, to build
an 11-6 lead.
Delavan and Spack teamed up to score back-to-back fourth-quarter
goals that made it 13-9 and effectively sealed the game.
