MADISON, N.J. – A balanced attack and quality defensive
play added up to a 10-7 win for the Susquehanna men's
lacrosse team, which defeated Landmark Conference opponent Drew to
grab its fourth-straight victory.
The Crusaders (9-5, 2-2) used goals from six different players to
take down the Rangers (8-5, 2-2) in what also marked their
third-consecutive road contest.
Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) led all
scorers with a hat trick, while Tim Pastore
(Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) was the game's
points leader, chipping in two goals and two assists.
Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) also netted two goals to go along with an
assist.
Goalie Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion)
tallied 10 saves on the afternoon against a Drew team that out-shot
SU by a 50-26 margin.
SU did win 11-of-19 face-offs, thanks to another solid game from
Ryan Oakes (North Yarmouth, Maine/Cheverus). The
Crusaders also held a 40-32 edge in ground ball and forced 28 Drew
turnovers, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.
Forty-five seconds into the game, Austen Lein (New Vernon,
N.J./Madison) spotted Susquehanna the early 1-0 lead and
just 30 seconds later, Delavan upped to a 2-0 lead with his
unassisted goal.
Drew got on the board to make it 2-1, but the Crusaders
proceeded to rattle off three unanswered goals to cap off the
quarter and give themselves a 5-1 edge.
The Rangers scored the only two goals of the second quarter to make
it a two-goal game (5-3) at halftime.
Drew came out of halftime and scored two goals, the second of which
knotted the game at five-all. SU responded with two more goals of
its own to regain a two-goal edge. Drew's Steve Gentile
netted the final goal of the third quarter to make it 7-6 with just
15 minutes to play.
Susquehanna was able to out-score Drew 3-1 over those 15 minutes,
including two goals from Pastore, to clinch the 10-7 win.
