TOWSON, Md. – The winningest season in Susquehanna
men's lacrosse history came to a close on Wednesday afternoon
with SU's 11-3 semifinal loss to Goucher in the
Landmark Conference Tournament.
The No. 4 seeded Crusaders could not put together enough offense
to take down No. 1 Goucher, despite limiting the Gophers to just
five first-half goals.
Susquehanna finished its season with an 11-6 record, marking the
most wins in program history as the team also made its first-ever
appearance in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
SU netted three goals, all from different players, as Luke
Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison), Billy
Spack (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and J.B.
Montanye (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola HS) provided the
scoring.
The Crusaders did hold a 47-39 advantage in groundballs and won a
decisive 12-of-17 face-offs, with all 17 taken by senior
Ryan Oakes (North Yarmouth, Maine/Cheverus).
Starting goalie Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower
Merion) played the first 33 minutes of the game while
Anthony Maiorella (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain
Lakes) played the final 27 minutes for SU with the two
combining for 19 saves.
Goucher (11-5) opened the game with four unanswered goals, with
two in the opening quarter and two more in the first eight minutes
of the second quarter. Spack eventually broke that
stretch with a goal at the 5:27 mark of the second quarter to make
it 4-1.
The Gophers scored again inside the two-minute mark of the second
quarter to take a 5-1 lead at halftime. Unfortunately, they came
out of the break and continued to roll offensively, rattling off
six straight goals to up their lead to 10-1 with 3:38 remaining in
the third quarter.
Delavan and Montanye finally put
together back-to-back goals for SU in the final 20 seconds of that
third quarter for a 10-3 game, but Goucher held the Crusaders
scoreless in the final quarter while tacking on an insurance goal
to seal the 11-3 victory.
