MADISON, N.J. – Despite cutting what had been an 18-point
deficit nearly in half, the Susquehanna men's basketball team
could not complete the comeback and fell 67-56 to Drew on Saturday
evening in Madison, N.J.
SU (12-7, 6-3) saw its four-game win streak snapped with the loss,
but still holds a 6-3 mark in Landmark Conference action.
Spenser Spencer's (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside)
17 points marked a team-best and he also tied for the game high
with six assists. Sophomore center Harley Sellinger (Mill
Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) added 14 points to go along
with his team-high seven rebounds.
While Drew (5-15, 3-6) had one more turnover than did the
Crusaders, the Rangers were able to convert those 16 SU turnovers
into 21 points.
Both teams saw shares of the lead for the first four minutes of the
game. Six minutes into the action, SU found itself down 14-9 before
going on a brief, 4-2 run to make it 16-13 still in favor of the
Rangers.
Asmar Capers responded with a trey to put his team up by six
(19-13) with 7:26 remaining in the half and at the five-minute mark
of the period, Susquehanna was still down by five (23-18) despite a
Spencer three with 4:59 to play.
Tony Seldon (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic)
kept the momentum on SU's side with a dunk to make it a
three-point contest (23-20) 30 seconds later.
Unfortunately the Rangers countered with five unanswered points to
go up 28-20 and the Crusaders would eventually go into halftime
down 32-25.
Back-to-back buckets from Sellinger and Mike Perillo
(Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) early in the second half made it a
34-29 game with nearly 18 minutes still to play. A Sellinger layup
two minutes later quickly made it a three-point game (34-31) but
four minutes later, Drew was ahead by 10 (41-31), marking the first
double-digit lead of the game for either squad.
With 10 minutes to play, that lead had stretched to 14 points
(50-36) and with eight minutes on the clock, it stood 53-38 in
favor of the Rangers.
The Crusaders managed to trim the lead to nine points (56-47)
courtesy of a 9-0 run that ran the clock down to 5:08. A
Scott Marcinek (Coal Twp., Pa./Shamokin Area)
three-pointer at the 4:25 mark made it an eight-point game
(58-50).
Two Sellinger free throws with 2:52 to play brought SU within six,
60-54. At the one-minute mark though, the Crusaders again found
themselves back down by double digits (67-56) and neither team
scored another point, making the 67-56 score the final outcome.
The men are back on the road next weekend beginning Friday with a
7:30 p.m. game at Moravian.
