RADNOR, Pa. – The 2012 season did not start out on the right
foot for the Susquehanna women's basketball team which
dropped a 68-37 decision at Cabrini on Tuesday night.
SU (3-9) struggled in the field with just one player reaching
double digits in freshman Eleni Dimou
(Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh), who had 10
points. Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa. /
Wallenpaupack) led the Crusaders on the boards with 10
rebounds.
The Susquehanna defense did force 22 Cabrini turnovers which led
to 13 points for the Crusaders.
Cabrini jumped out to a 6-0 lead less than four minutes into the
action and with 12:15 remaining in the opening half, the Crusaders
found themselves down 13-6 before Dimou made it 13-9 with a
three-pointer.
Unfortunately, the Cavaliers countered with a 12-0 stretch that
made it 25-9 with 6:21 to play. The teams traded buckets for the
remainder of the half but SU still found itself down 32-17 at
halftime.
Five-plus minutes into the second half, a Mariah Monahan
(Towanda, Pa. / Towanda Area) jumper made it 39-23 and two
Shelby Weikel (Gordon, Pa. / North
Schuylkill) free throws two minutes later cut the lead to
14 (39-25) with 12:34 on the clock.
With less than nine minutes to play, Dimou sank two free throws
for a 45-32 score but 16 unanswered points by the Cavaliers
effectively put the game out of reach.
The women are back at home Saturday and Sunday to open the rest of
league play with games against Drew and USMMA. Saturday's
game time is 7:30 p.m. and Sunday's game tips-off at 4
p.m.
