Crusaders Hold on to Defeat Rangers in Conference Action

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna senior guard Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash. / Lakeside) led all scorers with 27 points and three other Crusaders finished in double figures as SU defeated Drew 83-77 in the first men's basketball Landmark Conference game of 2012.

SU (7-5, 1-1) found itself down early in the opening half before a Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) bucket and two baskets by J.T. Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) gave the Crusaders their first lead at 15:53.

A Wilson trey, a Mike Perillo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) layup and a score by Spencer gave the Crusaders a 10 point cushion at with 6:17 remaining in the first half. Two more three-pointers by Spencer increased the SU lead to 40-21 with 3:52 left.

Spencer nailed another long-range three to keep the lead at 19 with 1:51 left on the clock. A quick Drew 7-0 run narrowed the Crusader lead to 43-31 at the intermission.

SU scored 15 points off of seven Drew miscues in the opening period. Spencer had 17 first half points and Wilson joined him in double-figures with 11 points.

Drew (2-11, 0-2) trimmed the Crusader lead to eight in the first minutes of the second half before SU went on a 19-7 run that was capped off by a Tony Seldon (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) dunk to increase their lead 63-44 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Rangers chipped away at the lead for the remainder of the game, but SU sealed the victory with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.

Spencer was perfect from the free throw line, shooting 9-of-9. Wilson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards. Sellinger also finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Brendan Rezny (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta) registered 11 points for the Crusaders.

Drew was led by 23 points by Asmar Capers and 12 points from Terrell Brown.

The Crusaders continue their homestand with another Landmark Conference match against Merchant Marine tomorrow at 2 p.m.
