SELINSGROVE, Pa. – An offensive outburst combined with a
solid defensive effort added up to a 5-1 Susquehanna men's
soccer win over visiting Goucher on Saturday afternoon, which also
marked Senior Day for the program.
The 20th-ranked Crusaders (11-2, 3-1) saw five different
players score the five goals as the team proceeded to out-shoot
Goucher (3-8-1, 1-4-0) 19-6 over the course of the game.
All three SU goalies saw time with senior starter Matt
Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) playing just
under 60 minutes with three saves in the process.
The Crusaders also dominated in corner kicks, taking 12 while
limiting the Gophers to only four.
Andrew Murphy (Natick, Mass./Natick) accounted for
the first SU goal less than five minutes into the action off a
Daniel Sosa (Columbia, Pa./York Catholic) corner
kick. Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy)
added the team's second goal seven minutes later on a header
and John Arnold (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg)
put the third goal in the net with 16:08 on the clock.
That 3-0 lead stood until halftime when, less than one minute after
taking the field for the second half, David Trank (Mendham,
N.J./West Morris Mendham) scored his third goal in two
games for a 4-0 Susquehanna lead.
Goucher was able to snap the shutout with less than nine minutes to
play off one of their corner kicks but Andrew Hayes
(Hoboken, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) responded with
SU's fifth and final goal of the match to keep the game well
out of reach.
Prior to the start of the game, the team's nine senior
members were honored in a pregame ceremony.
The Crusaders return to action on Oct. 17 when they travel to
Landmark Conference foe Juniata for a 3:30 p.m. game.
