SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey squad took a
break from league action to play host to Kean on Tuesday night and
came away with a 2-1 victory over the Cougars.
SU (5-10) scored the first and last goals of the game to get past
Kean (7-9) in the opening game of a two-game homestand.
Despite being out-shot 9-5 by the Cougars, it was the Crusaders who
made the most of their shots by scoring on two of them. Five
different players took shots for SU and two different players
scored both goals in a solid all-around effort from the team.
Goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern)
surrendered only one late first-half half and made three saves in
her 70 minutes of action in the cage.
Allison Abey (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) connected on her
only shot of the game at 10-minute mark on a penalty shot that got
past Kean goalie Katie DiCarlo to hand Abey and her team the 1-0
edge.
That remained the score until just over two minutes into the second
half when the Cougars' Laura Cheatham scored the
equalizer.
However, with just over 25 minutes still to play, there was plenty
of time to snap that tie and Nicole Solino
(Madison, N.J./Madison) did just that with her goal in the
45th minute that made it 2-1 in favor of her Crusaders.
That lead stood up thanks to solid defensive effort from SU and
continued offensive pressure on the Cougars' defense.
Susquehanna remains at home on Saturday, Oct. 20 to host William
Paterson at 1 p.m. in what will be the team's annual Breast
Cancer Awareness game.
