KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Three different players provided goals
for the Susquehanna men's soccer team as the Crusaders took
down USMMA 3-0 early Saturday afternoon to capture their
13th victory of 2012. The team also officially clinched
a spot in the Landmark Conference postseason.
SU improved to 13-2-0, 5-1-0 overall with just one Landmark
Conference game remaining and is in search of home field advantage
in the conference semifinals on Oct. 31.
The Crusaders' three goals could have been more as they took
21 shots while holding the Mariners to four, but SU struggled to
put the ball on net with only five shots on goal.
Fortunately three of those on-goal shots found their way into the
back of the net and the Susquehanna defense picked up its seventh
shutout of the season. Goalie Matt Salsman (Selinsgrove,
Pa./Selinsgrove Area) was forced to make just one save all
afternoon thanks to the stellar play of the defense.
Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy) got
the scoring started with a goal at the 12:16 mark when he received
a pass from David Trank (Mendham,
N.J./West Morris Mendham) and scored just five feet away
from the USMMA goalie. Fry's goal marked the only scoring of
the first half as SU went into halftime holding on to that slim,
one-goal lead.
The second half, however, provided some much-needed cushioning for
the Crusaders. It took Joe DeLuca (Freehold, N.J./St. John
Vianney) less than three minute to put the ball past USMMA
goalie Stephen Fucito after a long pass from Andrew Murphy
(Natick, Mass./Natick) led to his breakaway goal.
With 16 minutes left in the game, Sean Leister (Navesink,
N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was able to tack on a
third goal for Susquehanna on a header and the Mariners went the
final 43 minutes of the game without taking another shot and SU
easily hung on for the win.
The Crusaders play their final home game of the regular season on
Tuesday when they host King's (Pa.) at 7 p.m.
