WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Playing their final non-conference match of the season, Susquehanna's women's soccer team played to a 4-4 double overtime draw against the Wildcats of Penn College on Thursday evening.
SU (4-8-3) gave up a goal in the third minute of the game and trailed 1-0 entering halftime before exploding for four goals in the second half, all being scored by different players.
Senior Brianna Soars (Williamsport, Pa. / Loyalsock Twp.) scored the equalizer in the 47th minute to start the offense for SU, with an assist from classmate Leah Gardiner (Portland, Conn. / Kingswood-Oxford).
The Crusaders grabbed their first lead of the match in the 60th minute with a goal off the foot of senior Megan Stevens (Pipersville, Pa. / Palisades), who took a feed from freshman Alexandra Mason (Stratham, N.H. / Porstmouth Christian Academy).
SU went ahead 3-1 two minutes later when Laura Buriak (Salem, Va. / Salem) scored off a dish from senior Kelly Bassett (Hillsdale, N.J. / Pascack Valley). SU's scoring barrage ended with an unassisted goal from Kelsey Hermick (Hallstead, Pa. / Elk Lake) in the 70th minute.
Despite having a 4-1 lead, the Crusaders gave up three Wildcat goals in the last 15 minutes of regulation, forcing overtime with neither team netting the golden goal.
The Crusaders fired off a season-high 33 shots compared to the Wildcats' 17. Buriak led all players with seven shots followed by Soars who had six.
Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J. / Woodstown) got the starting nod in goal, stopping one shot. Cameron Weaver (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) made five saves in the second half but surrendered the three second half scores.
The Crusaders conclude the 2012 season with a Landmark Conference match at Moravian on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
