BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A 4-0 win at Moravian combined with a series
of tie-breaking procedures all added up a No. 1 seed for the No.
14/20 Susquehanna men's soccer team in the upcoming Landmark
Conference postseason tournament.
The Crusaders (15-2-0, 6-1-0) will host No. 4 seed Drew on
Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. The tie-breaker procedure was a
lengthy one as SU, Scranton and Catholic all finished with 6-1-0
conference marks. The seedings came down to the drawing of names
out of a hat, the outcome of which saw the Crusaders take the No. 1
seed. Catholic is No. 2, Scranton No. 3 and Drew No. 4.
SU won its program-record 15th game of the season and
recorded its ninth shutout of the fall, matching the record set in
2006.
Four different players accounted for the Crusaders' goals
while the SU defense limited Moravian to just five shots, none of
which were on goal, making for an easy day for goalie Matt
Salsman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and
Zach Zoller (Wall Township, N.J./Wall). Salsman
started and played 77-plus minutes.
Patrick Fry (Denver, Colo./Colorado Academy) led
the team with five shots and put one of those in the back of the
net. He was one of seven Susquehanna players to take at least two
shots in the game.
The Crusaders dominated in corner kicks with a 13-2 edge and
finished with 27 shots.
Fry got the scoring started after 18:17 minutes of action off an
assist from Daniel Sosa (Columbia, Pa./York
Catholic). Fry took the quick pass from Sosa and put the
ball into the left side of the net for a 1-0 Susquehanna lead.
With less than 10 minutes to go in the half, Samuel Tana
(Baldwin, Md./St. Paul's) was able to make it 2-0 on
an unassisted goal that went just past Greyhounds goalie Mike
Brand.
Just four minutes into the second half, SU was able to pad that
lead when Brandon Kates (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill
East) netted his fourth goal of the season following a
corner kick from John Arnold (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Mechanicsburg) that put the Crusaders up 3-0.
That remained the score until 90 seconds remained in the game when
Pedro Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Gunnery) added an
insurance goal for the 4-0 score and marked the final goal of the
afternoon.
