GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's and
women's swimming & diving teams each went 1-1 at
Gettysburg on Saturday. Both teams defeated Messiah but fell to the
host Bullets.
The men (2-1) defeated Messiah 172-89 while the women (2-1) were
victorious over the Falcons 138.5-122.5 SU's men lost to
Gettysburg 174-87 and the women fell 154-107.
The women's meet got started with 200 medley relay where the
Crusaders placed third with a final time of 1:55.56 from
Lexi Cole (Danville, Pa./Danville), Kelsey
Lessard (Chesterown, Md./Queen Anne's County),
Avanti Banks (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg)
and Kyle Seaman (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Glenelg.
Devin Lessard (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's
County) brought home a first-place finish in the 1000 free
with her time of 10:56.06, three seconds ahead of the runner-up
from Gettysburg. Teammate Dana Pontecorvo (New Providence,
N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) was third (11:20.04) in the
event.
Cole touched the wall in the 200 free in 2:01.57, a second-place
time, and Annie Bruxelles (Hockessin, De./Sanford
School) won the 100 backstroke with her mark of 1:01.70,
eclipsing her previous PR of 1:02.92. Cole later went on to place
third in the 200 backstroke (2:18.79).
Kelsey Lessard was third in the 100 backstroke (1:11.44) and sister
Devin picked up another first-place finish by winning the 200
butterfly in 2:13.73.
Kelsey also placed third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of
2:33.54 and Devin won the 500 free in 5:18.31 for her third
first-place finish of the afternoon. In that same race, Pontecorvo
took fourth (5:35.27).
Banks managed a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:04.18)
and Kelsey Lessard followed that swim with a winning time of
2:18.17 in the 200 IM.
The women's meet ended with the 200 freestyle relay where
Alex Bornman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley), Bruxelles, Cole and Seaman finished third
(1:44.93), just one second off the winning time of 1:43.99.
The team returns to conference action next weekend when SU travels
to Catholic for a 2 p.m. meet.
