WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Despite limiting Wilkes to just two goals, the Susquehanna field hockey team could only put one goal on the scoreboard and fell 2-1 on Tuesday night at Wilkes.
The Colonels (5-7) clearly held the edge on offense, taking 28 shots (18 on goal) while limiting the Crusaders (3-10) to just four, three of which came in the first half.
Goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) played all 70 minutes and had 16 saves against the persistent Wilkes offense.
It took Wilkes' Ashley Hahn just 50 seconds to put a goal on the board for the Colonels as she knocked the ball in the cage after a goalie deflection to quickly make it 1-0.
Just 15:11 into the game, however, Ally Bradley (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) was able to net the equalizer, her fifth goal of the season, thanks to an assist from Brodie Ercole (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) for a 1-1 game. As time wound down in the opening half, it remained tied at one.
Despite holding SU without a shot for all but the final minutes of the second half, it was not until seven minutes remained in the game that Wilkes was able to turn one of those shots into a goal. Hahn struck again at the 63:11 mark to make it a 2-1 game and left the Crusaders little time to respond.
Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack) fired off Susquehanna's lone second-half shot with just 90 seconds remaining but it was saved and SU never again threatened, sealing the Wilkes win.
The Crusaders close out a three-game road swing on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Goucher.
