SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 10 Susquehanna men's
soccer dream season came to a close on Saturday evening, falling to
No. 5 Ohio Northern 4-1 in the NCAA Division-III Sweet Sixteen.
SU set program records this year for wins (18), shutouts (12),
All-Landmark Conference performers (7) and NCAA Tournament
victories (2) under head coach Jim Findlay in his 15th
year.
The Crusaders (18-3-1) got on the board early on in the first
half as senior back Brandon Kates (Cherry Hill, N.J. /
Cherry Hill East) netted his fifth goal of the season in
the 17th minute to give SU the 1-0 advantage.
The Polar Bears (23-2-0) countered with a quick response,
notching the equalizer in the 21st minute off the foot
of their leading scorer Keegan Ross. ONU struck again in the
22nd minute to claim the lead, 2-1, which stood at
intermission.
At halftime, both teams had two corner kicks apiece but ONU had
the edge in shots, 11-6.
The Polar Bears scored once more in the 55th minute
to increase their lead 3-1 with a goal from Austin Windsor.
ONU stretched their lead to 4-1 with another Ross goal in the
80th minute as the Polar Bears advanced to the Elite
Eight to take on the winner of Montclair State and Trinity (Texas)
tomorrow.
Junior First Team All-Conference forward Patrick Fry
(Denver, Colo. / Colorado Academy) led SU with four shots.
Kates finished the match with three as did freshman Samuel
Tana (Baldwin, Md. / St. Paul's).
Senior All-Conference goalkeeper Matt Salsman
(Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) faced 23 shots and
made seven saves in net.
