ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Susquehanna's Jake Eskin
(Germantown, Md./Churchill) tied the game at 64 with just
seven remaining, but Elizabethtown's Ben Cable hit a
game-winning buzzer beater to hand SU a tough, 66-64 road loss on
Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Luke Cable (York, Pa./West York) led the
Crusaders (1-3) with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting with 15 of those
points coming from three-point range. Mike Perillo
(Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) added 12 points, seven assists and
six steals. J.T. Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII
Regional) added 17 points and four boards.
SU was out-rebounded by Elizabethtown (1-3) by a 35-26 margin
although Wally Rutecki (Springfield,
Pa./Springfield) finished with a team-high eight
boards.
There were seven lead changes and seven tied scores throughout the
40 minutes of back-and-forth play. Both teams held eight points
leads over the course of the game with the Crusaders'
eight-point edge coming early in the second half after opening the
period on a 13-4 run.
The Blue Jays held their eight-point lead with 5:41 left in the
first half on a Lee Eckert layup that made it 23-15. By the time
the half ended, however, SU was within just one of the lead (27-26)
after a Rutecki layup with four ticks remaining marked the final
bucket of the half.
With 11:12 remaining in the game, Susquehanna remained ahead by
eight (46-38) thanks in large part to that 13-4 run that opened the
half. That lead lasted until the 5:52 mark when Ben Cable tied it
at 51 with less than six minutes to play. While Eskin was able to
tie the game with eight seconds left, the Crusaders were never able
to regain the lead as the Blue Jays came away with the win on Ben
Cable's buzzer beater.
SU returns home on Nov. 27 to host Penn State Harrisburg at 7:30
p.m.
