SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After two weeks on the road, the
Susquehanna women's basketball team enjoyed a win in their
weekend opener as the Crusaders took down Goucher 63-46 on Friday
evening.
Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack)
fell just two rebounds shy of a double-double as she poured in a
game-high 15 points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds,
six of which were on the offensive glass.
Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station,
N.J./Somerville) chipped in 11 points while Korey
McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley Area) had a solid
all-around effort with eight points, nine assists and six
rebounds.
Defensively, Susquehanna (5-18, 2-10) held Goucher (5-18, 1-11)
without a single three-point bucket and forced 32 turnovers, which
translated into 28 SU points.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 7-0 just four minutes into the game
with four of those points coming courtesy of two Palazzi
jumpers.
SU remained ahead by seven, 17-10, midway through the half but
with 5:16 left in the half, that lead had been trimmed to one
(17-16). One minute later, the Gophers took their first lead of the
game, 18-17, before the Crusaders scored 11 points over the final
3:43 of action to take a 28-22 lead at the game's midway
point.
The opening minutes of the second half were all SU. A trey from
Nora Joyce (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) after
four minutes of play handed the Crusaders an 18-point lead
(42-24).
The lead never shrunk below 13 points for the remainder of the
game as Susquehanna easily maintained its double-digit lead over
the Gophers. A Palazzi free throw gave the Crusaders a game-high
20-point edge (63-43) as SU went on to win by the final score of
63-46.
SU is back in action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. contest against
Catholic. Saturday marks Play 4 Kay Day, an event in support of
breast cancer awareness, as well as Pepsi Day.
