SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's basketball
team kept it close for a while in their game against Catholic but
ultimately could not bring down the Cardinals, dropping a 74-62
decision on Saturday afternoon.
It wasn't until the final 10 minutes of the game that
Catholic (19-5, 10-3) really put the game out of reach as the
Crusaders trailed by only 10 points heading into that final stretch
of the game.
SU (5-19, 2-11) did boast three players in double figures, led by
14 from senior Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley
Area). Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station,
N.J./Somerville) and Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland,
Pa./Wallenpaupack) had 10 points apiece while
Arianna Stowe (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase)
led the team with her five rebounds and three assists.
What started as a 5-0 SU lead quickly gave way to a 7-5 Catholic
advantage less than four minutes into the game. SU regained a 10-7
lead on a McCaffrey jumper with 12:46 to play in the half, but just
46 seconds later, Catholic's Kelli Josephsen made it an 11-10
Cardinals lead.
Catholic never relinquished that lead and went up by 10 (27-17)
with 7:15 on the clock. The Crusaders fell behind by 15 (34-19) and
went into halftime trailing 36-22.
Less than 30 seconds into the second half, Susquehanna was down by
16 (38-22) but made it a 10-point game (38-28) after a Palazzi
jumper at the 18:20 mark.
The Crusaders remained within 12, 51-39, thanks to a
Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport
Area) bucket with 13:20 to play and with 9:40 on the
clock, Grunwald again made it a 10-point game (57-47) with a
jumper.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were able to quickly up their lead in
part due to a 9-2 run that made it 66-50 with 5:47 to play.
Catholic took a game-high 24-point (74-50) lead at the two-minute
mark and held SU to just two free throws in final minute to clinch
the 74-52 victory over Susquehanna.
The teams took part in Play 4 Kay Day, an event in support of
breast cancer awareness and named after famed women's
basketball coach, Kay Yow, who passed away from the disease. SU
also played the game in honor of Connie Harnum, SU's longtime
field hockey and tennis coach, and SU Sports Hall of Famer, who
passed away one year ago.
The Crusaders wrap-up their 2012 season at home next Saturday with
a 5:30 game against Juniata on Senior Day.
