SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's
basketball team was facing a tough challenge in a one-loss Juniata
team on Saturday evening and fell 77-48 to the Eagles.
It was Senior Night for the team and prior to the start of the
game, the team recognized the two senior members of the squad:
Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa. / Penns
Valley Area) and Samantha Pelletier (Harwinton,
Conn. / Lewis S. Mills).
Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station, N.J. /
Somerville) led the team in scoring with 10 points in just
18 minutes of action off the bench. She also led SU with four
rebounds and Mariah Monahan (Towanda, Pa. / Towanda
Area) added a team-best six assists.
The Crusaders (5-20, 2-12) shot just 6.7 percent from three-point
range while the Eagles (24-1, 14-0) shot at a 34.6 percent clip for
the game with an 83 percent effort at the free throw line.
After falling into an early 6-0 hole, baskets from McCaffrey and
Eleni Dimou (Center Valley, Pa. / Southern Lehigh)
made it a 6-4 game but a 9-0 Eagles run gave them their first
double-digit lead of the game, 15-4, six minutes into the
action.
They maintained a double-digit lead for the final 11:53 of the
half, at one point going up by 16 (33-17) at the five-minute
mark.
A three-point play from Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa. /
Wallenpaupack Area) with 32 seconds on the clock made it a
35-23 game but the Crusaders ultimately went into halftime trailing
38-23.
Juniata out-scored SU 39-25 in the second half of play, putting
the game out of reach early. The Eagles led by 20-plus points for
the final 16:52 of the game.
With 1:40 to play, Juniata took a game-high 29-point lead (77-48)
and neither team scored for the remainder of the game.
