WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite the chilly temperatures that were
anything but spring-like, the 2012 Susquehanna men's lacrosse
season officially got underway Saturday afternoon with a matchup at
Lycoming. Unfortunately for SU, the game ended in a 9-7 Warriors
win.
SU trailed 8-4 heading into the fourth quarter and despite
out-scoring Lycoming 3-1 in the fourth quarter could not pull off a
come-from-behind victory.
Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) and
Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) both had
two-goal efforts with Delavan also chipping in two assists for SU
(0-1).
Extra-man opportunities proved to be a big difference as Lycoming
(1-0) scored on three of their five chances, with all three of
those scores in the third quarter, while SU scored just one goal on
its five opportunities.
Goalie Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion)
played all but the final 1:08 of the game, making 13 saves in the
process.
The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two goals in each of the
first two quarters. Down by four with 1:05 left in the half, Lein
broke the shutout with a goal that was followed by a Delavan score
with 39 seconds remaining to make it a 4-2 game at halftime.
Pete Doelp (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) opened
up the second-half scoring with an early goal to make it a 4-3 game
but three man-up goals from Lycoming put the Crusaders in a 7-3
hole. By the end of the third quarter it stood 8-4 in favor of the
Warriors.
Down 8-5, SU scored the final three goals of the game, with each of
the goals coming from three different players, but Susquehanna was
unable to complete the comeback, falling 9-7.
The Crusaders open their home season on Wednesday with a 4 p.m.
game against Muhlenberg.
