SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The 2012 Susquehanna women's
lacrosse season opened on Tuesday afternoon with an 11-9 upset over
No. 19 Dickinson, giving SU a season-opening win while handing the
Red Devils their first loss of the season.
The Crusaders (1-0) trailed 6-3 at halftime but out-scored
Dickinson (2-1) 8-3 over the final 30 minutes of play to cap off
the come-from-behind victory.
Seven different players scored for SU led by Michelle
McGinniss's (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) hat trick.
Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J/Chatham) and
Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa./Avon
Grove) added two goals apiece with Ehler also chipping in
an assist.
Goalie Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye
Falls-Lima) notched 17 saves with 11 coming in the first
half.
It took the Red Devils less than 11 minutes to jump out to a 3-0
lead with goals from three different players. McGinniss snapped
that stretch with a goal at the 18:41 mark for a 3-1 game.
Following another Dickinson goal, SU put together back-to-back
goals from Ally Bauer (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon)
and Meredith Crane (Maplewood,
N.J./Columbia) to make it a one-goal game (4-3) but
Dickinson ended the half by score three unanswered goals to take a
6-3 lead into halftime.
A quick Red Devils goal put them ahead 7-3 over Susquehanna before
the Crusaders' offense and defense started coming together,
spelling trouble for Dickinson.
McGinniss netted her second goal at 26:42 for a 7-4 score. Two more
Dickinson goals made it a five-goal game (9-4) but with 22:45 still
to play, SU had plenty of time to mount a comeback.
And that's exactly what the Crusaders did by ending the game
on a 7-0 run that spanned the final 22:26 of play. A Reid goal at
12:12 tied it at nine and Reid scored the eventual game winner just
three minutes later on a free position goal that put her squad
ahead 10-9.
McGinniss capped off the scoring streak with an unassisted goal at
2:58 that made it 11-9, which remained the final score.
The Crusaders are on the road for two games in Maryland starting on
March 5 against King's (Pa.) in a 6:15 p.m. game.
