BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Down by just one point with 45 seconds to
play, the Susquehanna men's basketball team could not get
past Moravian, falling 68-64 on Friday night in Bethlehem.
There were 10 lead changes and 11 tied scores in the game, which at
one point saw Moravian lead by 19 before SU (12-8, 6-4) was able to
make it a one-point game late in the action.
Three players surpassed the 10-point mark, led by 21 from
Spenser Spencer (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside).
Freshman Tony Seldon (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest
Catholic), making his first start of the season, and
J.T. Wilson (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XIII Regional)
had 11 points apiece. Seldon also pulled down 12 rebounds for the
only double-double performance of the night.
The teams were evenly matched in most categories, although a 45
percent three-point percentage by the Greyhounds (12-9, 7-3) may
have been the difference in the game.
Neither team held more than a two-point lead for the first eight
minutes until back-to-back baskets from Wilson and Spencer made it
a 16-12 SU lead.
Three minutes later, consecutive three-point buckets from
Mike Perillo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and Wilson
put SU up 24-17 but Moravian remained within three, 26-23, with
7:36 on the clock.
The Greyhounds then put together seven unanswered points to regain
a 30-26 lead with less than five minutes to play in the half.
With two minutes left, SU remained behind by four, 36-32, before a
Seldon three quickly chopped that lead to one (36-35). The
Greyhounds managed to out-score SU over the final 55 seconds,
however, to take the 40-37 lead into the locker room.
The Crusaders opened the half by scoring eight of the first 11
points to go up 45-40, but an 8-3 Greyhounds run made it 48-all
with 14:35 left in the game.
Two minutes later, the Greyhounds took their first lead (53-52)
since the 19:45 mark of the second half. It was tied at 53 for more
than three minutes before the Greyhounds took a slim, 56-55 lead
with 8:32 left. Susquehanna was then down by seven (65-58) as the
clock ran down inside the five-minute mark.
With 2:27 to play, the Crusaders had made it a one-point game,
65-64, following two Spencer free throws. That remained the score
as the clock wound down to 45 seconds. Unfortunately, Moravian
managed three points in the closing seconds, marking the final
scoring of the game as SU fell 68-64.
SU faces Scranton tomorrow at 4 p.m.
