SCRANTON, Pa. -- Despite trailing at halftime by only five points,
Susquehanna's women's basketball team couldn't stop the hot
shooting Lady Royals of Scranton in the second half and dropped
their second Landmark Conference game of the weekend, 73-50.
The Lady Royals (13-9, 8-3) started the game on a 14-6 run
before the Crusaders(4-18, 1-10) chipped away at the lead and found
themselves behind by four (18-14) with 7:22 remaining in the first
half.
The Crusaders found themselves down 31-26 at intermission. SU
had 13 points from the bench in the opening period, with freshman
Shelby Weikel (Gordon, Pa. / North Schuylkill)
scoring six points and recording four steals.
On the boards, Scranton held a slight edge on the offensive
glass, grabbing eight rebounds to Susquehanna's five. SU forced 13
turnovers, which led to eight Crusader points.
In the second half, the Lady Royals increased their lead to 16
before Weikel drained a three for the Crusaders' first points of
the second half. Scranton answered right back with a trey to push
the lead to 19 with 15 minutes remaining.
Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa. / Loyalsock
Twp.) and Nora Joyce (Scranton, Pa. / West
Scranton) sank consecutive field goals to trim the defecit
to ten with 13:35 left.
Samantha Pelletier (Harwinton, Conn. / Lewis S.
Mills) drained a trey and made a layup before Scranton
responded with several bombs from downtown to increase their lead
to 20 (61-41) with 8:46 left.
The Lady Royals shot 66.7 percent from three-point range
(8-of-12) in the second half and were led behind 22 points from
senior Sidney Jaques.
Williams led SU with 10 points and five rebounds. Weikel
finished the afternoon with nine points and five steals.
Korey McCaffrey (Milleheim, Pa. / Penns Valley
Area) chipped in with eight points and dished out a
game-high seven assists.
SU is back in action as the Crusaders host Goucher on Friday,
Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
