SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Landmark Conference season started out on an exciting note for the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team, but that exciting start came in the form of a heartbreaking, 9-8 overtime loss to Drew University on Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders (3-4, 0-1) and Rangers (5-0, 0-1) traded goals for the entire game, with neither team taking more than a two-goal edge at any point in the game. Drew did out-shoot SU by a 49-27 margin but finished the afternoon with just 10 goals.

Eight different players recorded goals in the game for Susquehanna, with Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) finishing with two. Lein also chipped in an assist for a three-goal outing. Tylere Fritts (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had one goal and an assist for SU.

Susquehanna's defense forced 24 Drew turnovers while committing only 20 of its own. Face-offs proved problematic for SU, though, as the team won just 8-of-24 for the day.

Goalies Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) and Will Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) both saw action with Daney playing three of the four quarters and finishing with 16 saves.

The scoring went back and forth for the first half with Drew briefly taking a 3-2 lead with 3:57 on the clock before Lein knotted the game at three with 3:30 left, making it 3-3 after the first 15 minutes.

Drew narrowly out-scored Susquehanna 4-3 in the second quarter. Lein's man-up goal at 5:41 briefly handed his squad the 6-5 advantage but back-to-back Rangers goals to close out the quarter made it 7-6 in favor of Drew at halftime.

Goals were at a higher premium over the final two quarters as the teams combined for five goals over the remainder of regulation. Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood0 and John Kerrigan (Maple Glen, Pa./La Salle College HS) notched the final two goals of the third quarter to keep it tied at eight-all.

Both teams found the back of the net once in the final period of regulation, forcing overtime with the score knotted at nine.

Unfortunately, it took Drew's Mark Barus only 1:44 to score the game winner, handing SU its second-straight OT loss.

The Crusaders remain at home on Wednesday to host Immaculata at 5 p.m.
