SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna's softball squad split Saturday's doubleheader against Moravian by winning game two 7-5. The Crusaders dropped the first contest 7-2.
In game two, SU (7-5, 1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind a sacrifice fly from Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley). Moravian scored two runs in the top of the second to take the lead 2-1.
The Orange & Maroon went ahead 3-2 after Brianna Murphy's (Hazlet, N.J. / Mater Dei) two-run double in the bottom of the third. Murphy later scored on an error to increase the lead 4-2.
Moravian tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth, but SU regained the lead 5-4 after Lauren Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) ripped a double and Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J. / Indian Hills) drove Gilbert in with a single.
SU tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-4. Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa. / Central Bucks East) and Madison Clark (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs) both picked up RBI singles.
The Greyhounds (6-6, 1-1) scored once more in the sixth but strong defense by the Crusaders sealed the win.
Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) picked up the win, her third of the season. She struck out five and scattered seven hits in seven innings of work.
Lauren Gilbert went 3-for-3 at the plate. Finizio went 2-for-4 and Murphy picked up two hits in the victory.
This was their first win against Moravian since May 1, 2010.
In game one, Finizio went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Devlin and Clark both had an RBI in the loss.
Softball travels to Dickinson for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 20 starting at 3:00 p.m.
