Softball Splits with Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Susquehanna's softball team split Thursday's non-conference doubleheader with Gettysburg in a pair of one-run games. The Crusaders dropped the first game 8-7 but won the second 3-2.

In the nightcap, the Bullets (8-7) went on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first. SU cut that in half by scoring once in the third on a Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J. / Indian Hills) RBI triple.

The Crusaders (12-8) went ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh after Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa.  / Central Bucks East) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Madison Clark (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs) hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly.

Alison Cullen (Branchburg, N.J. / Immaculata) went the distance, pitching seven effective innings while scattering six hits and striking out two earning her third win of the season.

Finizio finished game two 4-for-4 with a double and triple. In the doubleheader she went 7-for-8 at the plate.

In game one, SU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, N.J. / Mater Dei) ripped an RBI triple followed by a run-scoring double by Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa. / Abington Heights). Devlin capped off the scoring in the opening frame with an RBI single.

The Crusaders tacked on two more runs in the third to go ahead 5-0 as LaCoe blasted a two-run homer, her third of the season. Gettysburg got on the board after a sacrifice fly and RBI single cut the SU lead to 5-2.

Lauren Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) picked up an RBI single in the fourth to push the SU lead to 6-2. But the Bullets responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to trail 6-4.

Gettysburg cut the Crusader lead to 6-5 after a triple and RBI double in the fifth inning. SU scored once more in the top of the sixth after Larissa Luu (Montandon, Pa. / Milton) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to go up 7-5.

The Bullets took their first lead of the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and led 8-7 going into the seventh.

The Crusaders threatened to score with runners on second and third with one out, but Gettysburg held on for the come-from-behind win.

LaCoe finished game one going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Finizio also went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Devlin went 2-for-3.

Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) suffered the loss in relief for SU.

The Crusaders travel to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 31 to take on Landmark Conference opponent Catholic with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
