WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Susquehanna softball team swept
Catholic with 7-6 and 8-5 victories on Saturday in a conference
road doubleheader.
With the wins, SU dealt the Cardinals (13-9, 2-2) their first two
league losses of the year. Susquehanna, meanwhile, improves to 14-8
overall and 3-1 in league play.
In the opening game, four players had two hits with Lauren
Gilbert (Mechanicsville, Pa./Cumberland Valley) going
2-for-4 with two runs scored and Kathryn Gilbert
(Mechanicsville, Pa./Cumberland Valley) finishing 2-for-4
with two RBI and one run scored. Lisa Finizio (Oakland,
N.J./Indian Hills) also added two hits and two RBI while
Madison Clark (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)
drove in two runs.
In the circle, Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville,
Pa./Wyalusing Valley) pitched the first three innings,
giving up four runs on four hits. Allison
Cullen (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) tossed the
final four innings and surrendered two runs while striking out two
and walking just one.
The game was ultimately decided in the first inning as SU put five
runs on the board thanks to four hits and a Catholic error. Kathryn
Gilbert drove home two runs with a single and Clark sent home
another two with her double to center. The final run came courtesy
of a Courtney Miller (Kendall Park, N.J./South
Brunswick) RBI single to left.
The Cardinals got one run back in the first and added another
three in the second to make it a 5-4 game.
In the fourth inning, Susquehanna padded its lead with two more
runs with both scoring on Finizio's triple that made it
7-4.
Catholic made it a one-run game with a two-run fifth inning but
Cullen gave up only one hit over the final two innings to preserve
the SU win.
Game two was another close one but 12 hits from Susquehanna
combined with a complete game from Morgan Lewis (Newtown,
Pa./Council Rock North) propelled the Crusaders to the
doubleheader sweep.
Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights)
finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while catcher
Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East)
drove in three runs and scored another. Kathryn Gilbert continued
her hot streak with two more hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
Lewis went the distance and gave up five runs and struck out
three.
Catholic actually struck first with a single run in the first
before SU went up 2-1 thanks to a Kathryn Gilber two-run homer in
the second inning.
The Cardinals knotted the game at two in the bottom of the inning
before Clark drove in Kathryn Gilbert with a triple that put SU
ahead 3-2.
A five-run fifth inning for the Crusaders effectively clinched the
win. Finizio and LaCoe both had early-inning RBIs and Devlin
provided a three-run homer to cap off the inning's
scoring.
Catholic made it close by adding three runs on five hits in the
sixth inning but Lewis pitched in and out of trouble in the ninth,
ending the game on a pop up to shortstop to complete the
doubleheader sweep.
SU returns home on Tuesday, April 3 to host Misericordia in a
doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
