SALISBURY, Md. - The Susquehanna softball team, on its way back
from six games in Florida, made a stop in Salisbury for the two-day
Seagull Classic Tournament, beginning on Friday. The Crusaders
split their opening two games, defeating Baruch 5-4 before falling
6-0 to No. 9 Salisbury in the nightcap.
Susquehanna was no-hit against the ninth-ranked Seagulls.
In the opener against Baruch, SU led 5-4 heading into the bottom of
the seventh but Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock
North) walked the leadoff batter, who took second on
a ground out and advanced to third on a fielder's choice with two
outs, setting up the potential tying run. Lewis responded by
getting Toniann Donde to line out to first, preserving the
Susquehanna win.
Lewis went the distance for the Crusaders, striking out five in her
seven innings of work and walking just two batters.
Lisa Finizio (Oakland, N.J./Indian
Hills) accounted for three of SU's 10 hits in the win
while scoring one run and driving in another. Larissa Luu
(Montandon, Pa./Milton) knocked in two runs while
Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington
Heights) scored two runs.
Susquehanna pushed across solo runs in the first and second innings
before putting together a two-run third inning courtesy of Luu's
two-run single through the right side.
The team's fifth and final run came in the fourth when
Kathryn Gilbert's (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) single drove home Brianna
Murphy (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei), who had
tripled to center in the previous at-bat.
The Crusaders' bats could do nothing against Salisbury pitcher
Erika Brittingham, who tossed the no-hitter and put just two
runners on base, as Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central
Bucks East) drew a second-inning walk and Finizio
reached in the seventh on a fielding error by the second baseman.
Neither of those base runners advanced past second.
SU wraps-up its spring break trip with two more games in the
Seagull Classic on Saturday with contests against Frostburg State
and No. 15 Christopher Newport.
