WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Susquehanna's baseball team
ended a six game losing streak on Tuesday, defeating non-conference
opponent King's (Pa.) 3-2.
SU (13-15) started the first inning with an RBI single to left
field by Ethan Rieker (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim
Twp.) to go ahead 1-0.
The Monarchs (9-16) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the
second with an RBI double.
SU went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth from an RBI double
off the bat of Nick Kennedy (Brookeville, Md. / Good
Council).
Rieker led off the top of the sixth with a double followed by a
single from Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River
North). Ferlise put the Crusaders on top 3-1 after scoring
off an error by the catcher.
The Crusaders loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but
could not capitalize however, leaving the runners stranded on
base.
King's cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth
after an error by SU allowed a runner to score.
But closer Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. / Wyoming
Seminary) sealed the victory by striking out the side in
the bottom half of the ninth, earning his fourth save of the
season.
Luc Kocher (Middlebury Center, Pa. / Elkland)
registered the win, his second of the year. Kocher pitched 7 2/3
innings, scattering eight hits while striking out three, walking
three and allowing only one earned run.
Rieker ended the game with two hits. Pat Jennings (Essex
Falls, N.J. / West Essex) recorded his first hit of the
season and Zach Place (Towanda, Pa. / Towanda)
cracked a double for his first career hit as he started at first
base, his first action away from the mound this year.
The Crusaders head to Landmark Conference foe Drew for three
games, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 1:00
p.m.
