SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna's women's
lacrosse squad suffered its first defeat of the season, dropping a
13-9 contest to Landmark Conference opponent and number
16th ranked Catholic on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (8-5, 3-0) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead less
than six minutes into the opening half. The Crusaders (11-1, 1-1)
got on the board at 17:51 as Erin Dyer (West Caldwell, N.J.
/ James Caldwell) scored to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Catholic went on a three-goal run, with all the scores coming
from Mary Swarthout , and went ahead 6-1 with 7:36 left in the
half. Dyer scored her second of the day with an assist from
Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) to make
the game 6-2 at 6:51.
Lindsey Derstine (Coopersburg, Pa. / Southern
Lehigh) successfully converted a free-position shot and
trimmed the CUA lead to 6-3 with 2:36 left in the first.
But the Cardinals responded with two goals in the last 48
seconds in the first to take an 8-3 lead at the break.
The beginning of the second half saw the Crusaders rally as
Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J./ Chatham / Towson)
scored twice and Michelle McGinniss (Randolph, N.J. /
Randolph) added a goal to get within two (8-6) at
20:49.
Catholic answered with a four-goal run to increase their lead
12-6. Susquehanna climbed back within three (12-9) with 10:14 left
as Reid, Dyer and Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J. /
Columbia) all notched goals.
But Swarthout scored again at 10:01, her fourth of the game, and
Catholic held on for the victory.
The Cardinals held a 36-27 shot advantage and possessed 15 of 24
draw controls on the afternoon.
Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y. / Honeoye
Falls-Lima) made 12 saves in goal for the Crusaders.
SU will look to bounce back as they host Landmark Conference foe
Goucher on Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m. Three members of the
team will be honored for Senior Day.
