WASHINGTON, D.C. – The fourth quarter proved to be the
difference for the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team as SU
could not hold off Catholic in the final 15 minutes of action,
falling 14-11 in a road game on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (8-7, 3-3) held a slim, 10-9 lead heading into that
final period but they out-scored SU (9-4, 3-2) 4-2 to grab the
win.
Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland
Valley) led the offensive attack for the Crusaders with
four goals and an assist. Austen
Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) added three assists
while Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison)
finished with two goals and two assists.
Goalie Will Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath
Haven) played all but the final 7:32 of the game and made
17 saves while giving up 13 goals. Jordan
Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) had one save and
surrendered the final Catholic goal.
Catholic opened the game with back-to-back goals after just over
eight minutes of play. The Crusaders responded with two unanswered
goals to tie at two-all with 6:22 left and from there, neither team
held more than a two-goal advantage until 11:55 was left in the
game.
In the second quarter, there were a combined 10 goals, five for
each squad. SU went up 4-3 on a Delavan score with 12:51 on the
clock and remained ahead by one (6-5) on a Breakey score with 9:11
to play. Catholic ended the half by scoring two goals in a
seven-second span, though, to make it an 8-7 Cardinals lead at
halftime.
Both teams netted two goals in the third quarter before Catholic
put up a four-goal effort in fourth quarter to come away with the
win.
The Crusaders conclude their regular season on April 27 with a 4
p.m. game at Hood.
